Bridging the Gap: Launching Our Workplace Accessibility Survey and Fact Sheets

Empowering workplaces through accessibility: Discover our survey and fact sheets to foster inclusive environments for individuals with chronic conditions.

Today, we’re excited to publicly launch a significant initiative from Dynamic Capabilities Consulting, timed with Chronic Disease Awareness Day tomorrow, July 10th. While Chronic Disease Awareness Day is primarily an American initiative led by the national nonprofit Good Days and supported by numerous national patient advocacy organisations, its principles resonate globally, including here in Australia.

However, we recognise the unique landscape and needs within our own communities, given the different workforce compliance requirements that apply to employers and employees.

We’re immensely grateful to all who have contributed to bringing this initiative to life, from patients who have shared their lived experience to employers, advocacy groups, and clinicians.

Why This Survey Matters

Chronic diseases affect millions of people globally, including approximately half of Australians who have at least one chronic condition, as reported by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare. These conditions can significantly impact an individual’s ability to work, underscoring the importance of workplace accommodations. Our Workplace Accessibility Survey aims to pinpoint priority areas of need, enabling us to develop solutions that enhance employment accessibility for individuals with chronic medical conditions.

At Dynamic Capabilities Consulting, our mission is to empower businesses with the tools needed to thrive in an ever-changing landscape. By identifying current challenges faced by employees with chronic medical conditions, we equip employers with strategies to foster inclusive, productive, and compliant workplaces.

The survey is open until Friday, August 9th, 2024, and we eagerly anticipate presenting the results along with further insights to support enhancing workplace accessibility both locally and internationally.

Building on a Strong Foundation

This survey is a cornerstone of our broader strategy to support workplace accessibility. Throughout the first half of this year, we engaged with patients, clinicians, and advocacy groups to develop our inaugural series of fact sheets. These fact sheets provide essential information and practical advice on accommodating employees with chronic medical conditions and disabilities.

One of our key resources is the fact sheet on Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS). EDS is an invisible connective tissue disorder that affects approximately 1 in 5,000 Australians. Our fact sheet offers guidance on creating flexible work arrangements, ergonomic workspaces, health and wellness programs, and more, tailored to the specific challenges individuals with EDS face in the workplace.

Creating Benefits for Employers, Employees, and Society

Promoting accessible workplaces isn’t just about ethics—it’s also about smart business practices. Employers who invest in accommodating employees with chronic conditions experience numerous benefits:

  • Increased Productivity – Supported and valued employees are more engaged and productive.
  • Reduced Turnover – Inclusive practices foster loyalty and reduce turnover costs.
  • Enhanced Reputation – Companies known for inclusivity attract top talent and gain a competitive edge.
  • Compliance and Risk Management – Adhering to accessibility standards mitigates legal risks.

For society, inclusive workplaces contribute to reduced unemployment rates, improved quality of life for individuals with chronic conditions, and a culture of empathy and understanding. By advocating for accessibility through awareness, education, and action, we contribute to a more equitable society.
